Winter 2009 - Topscorer WINNERS!!!! Wednesday, April 15, 2009

In Men's B one player clearly stood above the rest throughout the semester, and it was no surprise seeing him take the palm of topscorer at the end. Revenge Royale's Maxime Valsamas was not only crowned Winter 2009 MB topscorer this season, but his 55 goaltotal becomes the highest goaltotal ever achieved in a single season in the same division. Chapeau bas Max! Even goalscorer extraordinaire Ahmet Turkdogan (Babaghanouj Int., 43 ) could not stop you this year (even though, it must be said, defaulted games and suspensions got in the way).

In Men's C the topscoring race was a close contest till the end, but the last two regular season matches is precisely the time 3 For Threesome's Andrew Murray chose to shift into turbo: seven tallies in two games for a 21 goaltotal, and the associated title of Winter 2009 MC topscorer. Rivals Tohid Fatanat Didor (BMess FC, 16 and Ryan MacDowell (MC3 United, 15 ) were left in the dust, allowing Andrew to claim the second title of his intramural career.

In Women's A, the battle raged in the last part of the season between Jamie Bolduc (Pekers) and Marie-Jasmine Lalonde-Parsi (Transformers). Unfortunately, an injury kept Marie-Jasmine sidelined just long enough for the Pekers captain to claim the title (18 ), and only by a two-goal difference. The spoils were shared however: topscoring title to Jamie, team title to MJ. Congratulations to both!

In Women's B, Molson Legends litterally dominated the scene both on the level of team performance (they ranked 1st in the standings with a 6-0 record) and player scoring. While it still wasn't enough to claim the championship, Molson Legends can be proud of their two topscorers Melissa Wils-Owens (20 ) and Leah Smith (16 ), who finished well above the rest in the topscoring race. Melissa wins the Winter 2009 WB topscorer title!

Down in Co-Rec A, it was heartbreak for Footballitis scoring duo Ahmet Turkdogan (40 ) and Victoria Sauveplane (18 ): after a great regular season campaign, the team surrendered to Suit Up in the final match. Ahmet and Victoria can however be happy about their topscoring titles, in the male and female categories respectively (this makes T-Shirt nş7 for Ahmet by the way).

In Co-Rec B, an interesting characteristic about our topscoring podium was that none of the players' teams made the playoffs final! Even more interesting was Thibaud Sonntag's storming ascension in the last stretch of the season, as the Mighty Nucks player overtook Geeyouknit rivals Jonathan Mark (27 ) and Kevin Nzomo (24 ) in a swooping move to claim the Winter 2009 CRB topscorer title. He totals a whopping 30 ! Jamie Bolduc of PEKers wins in the female category, which makes in two-for-two for Jamie after winning the WA division! Double congratulations to her!

Finally in the Co-Rec C division, it was "operation overtake" for Michael Quinn throughout the season and he carried it out brilliantly: totalling 34 , the Bad striker managed to best rival Andrei Munteanu of Kick Tease (28 ), claiming the title of Winter 2009 CRC topscorer!

Congratulations to everyone!!!

Winter 2009 - Season EPILOGUE Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Phew! It's finally over!! The Winter 2009 Indoor Soccer Intramurals came to an end last week, crowning yet another glorious batch of happy mug-hoisting soccer talent. And what a season it was! Team-wise, one of our closest competitions to date; scoring-wise, one of the most prolific semesters ever! Records were broken in almost every league, in particular Men's B which achieved the highest goaltotal in history to date: 55 goals by a single player in a single division!!

I have to admit when the year started I was rather skeptical, because this was our first Winter ever without a Men's A division (for reasons already outlined earlier in these pages). The "We don't like to play in MA" trend is a mysterious ailment afflicting intramural captains at the moment of team registration, and one which has grown fastidiously popular over the last couple of years but which I (mistakenly) thought would never contaminate the indoor season. Alas, when this Winter we forced yet again to discard the MA league and put everyone in Men's B, I feared the difference in technical level between some of the teams would give rise to rather uninteresting matches.

While this prediction was partially true for the regular season, all trends flew out the window come playoff time. From the Round of 16 onwards each team fought tooth and nail to stay in the competition, and it was truly a great display for the neutral soccer spectator to behold. In particular, every single one of our competitive divisions (MB, WA, WB, CRA, CRB) final matches was a very close contest between the finalists, with match scores hanging within a one-goal difference extremely close to the end. Not surprising you might say, but I can assure you this has not always been the case in the past intramural decade.

Anyways, I won't keep you for longer than I have to, as I'm sure most of you are now into deep "study mode". Before I leave you with the Winter topscorers and say goodbye however, let it be known that like every year McGill Athletics will be organizing Spring & Summer leagues during the months of May, June, and July. If you're in Montreal during that time (taking Summer courses or whatnot), we strongly encourage you to participate!

See you very soon on the fields of Molson Stadium and Forbes Field!
