5v5 SOCCER - FINALIZED TOPSCORERS Wednesday, April 14, 2010

In the Men's A division we had a winner on the horizon before playoffs even began, with Charles Hembert solidly in first rank with 28 goals (+10 on his closest rival). And with such a comfortable lead and no other close candidates, was it really a surprise to see the H1N1 player earn top spot at season's end? Charles even managed to add one more tally to his total, capping his semester with 29 and the title of Winter 2010 MA topscorer. Uncle Ruckus duo Samuel Lindauer and Ryan Lauzon (our June 2009 topscorer) end tied at 2nd spot with 18 goals.

In Men's B we had a truly exciting race all the way till the end, which actually culminated not in the final match but the Desautels vs. Team Dagbladet semi-final bout. Indeed, that game pitted our current leaders Mohammad Nikoofal and Ahmet "AC" Turkdogan in a scintillating head-to-head showdown, one which at the end of it all, saw both players come out as victors one way or another. Indeed, while the championship title went out to AC's Team Dagbladet, Mohammad scored enough goals to keep him solidly installed at n1. The Persian striker thus wins the Winter 2010 MB topscorer title, totalling a whopping 51 which is four more than AC (47 ) and plenty more than Bad Seeds's Gven Bolukbasi (35 ) in 3rd.

Finally in Men's C, our previous update indicated a clear winner and there were no surprises to change that. Before the final game of regular season, Ryan MacKellar's goal-total (22 ) was high enough it could not be reached, thereby earning the Accrington Stanley player the title of Winter 2010 MC topscorer. 2nd and 3rd-ranked Juan Giha Abusada (Grimsby Town FC, 21 ) complete the podium.

Down in the ladies' category, the Women's A league closed the season with a Chick Playbook double. Not only did the team win the championship title, they also managed to place main topscorer Jennifer Newton at n1 of scorer rankings. Jennifer tallies a 25 goaltotal, a comfortable lead over 2nd-ranked Camille St-Cyr (We Be Ballin) at 17.

Finally in Women's B, a close race came to an end with a quatuor of players in tight contention. Ultimately Carolyn Seath's semi-finals performance was strong enough to earn the Footloose player an edge over her rivals, two goals ahead of The Situation's Kimberley Smith and four ahead of Molson Legends's Melissa Wils-Owens. Carolyn ends the season with a total of 22 .

Down in Co-Rec B, there were really no surprises to see all-time topscorer Ahmet "AC" Turkdogan add yet another title to his intramural career. As if winning the championship mugs was not enough, the Sexed Up Again captain also finished the season with 47 and left Sindre's List's rival Denis Zezin well in the dust at 39 . The final match showdown between these two teams left the scorer situation unchanged, enabling AC to add T-shirt n10 to his already well-filled wardrobe. Congratulations should also go to Sindre's List's Rose Frank, who earns the topscoring title in the female category with a nice 29 !

And lastly, the race in the Co-Rec C division seemed like a close one all the way to the final game, but boy did Arash Baradaran Shokouhi make a statement in that last match! With a stunning 6-goal performance vs. Twinkle Toes, the Penfielder II player cut the finish line with a more than comfortable +6 lead over his closest rivals (ShamWow's Richard Kiplesund and Jumbalaya's Eric Dingle), finishing the season with 23 and the Winter 2010 CRC title in the bag!

MID-PLAYOFFS Update!!!! At last!! :) Thursday, April 1, 2010
Greetings soccer enthusiasts!

Well, it has certainly been a long while since our last news report! With the handling of both the indoor 5v5 and 2v2 leagues this semester, I have certainly had my hands full! Taking care of two full sports leagues simultaneously is no piece of cake let me tell ya. To give you just an idea of the work it represents, here are some stats:
  • Seven 5v5 divisions (MA, MB, MC, WA, WB, CRB, CRC) and five 2v2 divisions (MA, MB, WA, CRA, CRB), for a total of 13 separate team groups.
  • 106 teams in 5v5 and 38 teams in 2v2, for a total of 144 squads to handle concurrently.
  • Scheduling restrictions up the wazoo, because no one wants to play their 2v2 game @ the same time they have 5v5 (and vice-versa).
  • Double the work in scorer statistics! And you soccer maniacs sure like your rankings updated quickly & frequently, don'tcha?

In other words quite the time commitment!! One I am glad to be making though, all for the love of the BEAUTIFUL GAME! What a guy huh?

Still, not much time left for news updates and to make matters worse, I have been quite busy with other work commitments recently: the result was the Winter 2010 topscoring race largely went unnoticed... until now. :) We are deep into the playoff bout at this point and clear favorites are lining up in each division: as teams get progressively eliminated each round, it is becoming rapidly obvious only a select few will be able to mount a challenge for n1!

So, and without further ado, let's have a look at who the next IM soccer star could be...

Scorers and Team Rankings have been updated for all leagues, all divisions, and all games up to (and including) Wednesday March 31st.

5v5 SOCCER Thursday, April 1, 2010

Starting with 5v5 Soccer and the Men's A division, there already appears to be a clear winner at the semi-finals stage! H1N1 sure have a tough mountain to climb in Semi-Finals vs. title-favorites Uncle Ruckus, but their main striker Charles Hembert has taken a solid +10 lead over previous topscorer favorite Samuel Lindauer (Uncle Ruckus). It just so happens the latter is currently out of the country (with a strong likelihood not to return before season end), so the task to test Charles's 1st-spot and his 28 rests upong Josu Lucate (Uncle Ruckus) and Galacticos FC duo Jeffrey Gaard & Zaakir Jiwa. Are they up for it?

In Men's B, the topscoring race has run ragged for most of the season and three men have been dominating it throughout (one of which MB Winter 2006 and CRB Winter 2007 topscorer Gven Bolukbasi of Bad Seeds fame). At the semi-finals stage however, the two main favorites are Desautels's Mohammad Nikoofal (47 ) and Team Dagbladet's Ahmet "AC" Turkdogan (41 ). Is it really any shock to see our very own all-time topscorer in contention for yet another topscoring title? To see this happen at the B-division level certainly is surprising but be that as it may, the next semi-final bout opposing Desautels to Team Dagbladet promises to be E-X-P-L-O-S-I-V-E folks!! Mark your calendars: Tuesday 6-Apr @ 19:30 is a game you don't want to miss!

Finally in Men's C, the race has almost come to an end with a topscorer virtually crowned! Indeed just the game FC Hammer vs. Rauless is left to play in regular season, and Ryan MacKellar's goal-total (22 ) seems to be sufficient to earn the Accrington Stanley player a nifty topscoring title over 2nd and 3rd-ranked Juan Giha Abusada (Grimsby Town FC, 21 ) & Charles Alexander (3 For Threesome, 20 ). The only person who may still realistically upset this final ranking is Erik Bordeleau, and in order to do so the Rauless player will have to score at least 6 goals in his next game! No simple task!

Down in the ladies' category, the Women's A league has been completely dominated by Chick Playbook up to this point. No surprises therefore at seeing their main target-man (target-woman?) Jennifer Newton with a solid +7 lead over her rivals. Totalling 20 , Jennifer has this title pretty much in the bag with little that Sofia Solar (Transformers) and Camille St-Cyr (We Be Ballin) can do about it. Unless...

Finally in Women's B the race is much much closer, with many of the leading ladies still very much in the competition (both individually and team-wise). For the moment, Footloose's Carolyn Seath and The Situation's Kimberley Smith (both at 19 ) have a short lead over rivals Rebecca Brunswick-Werner (The Good) & Winter 2009 WB topscorer Melissa Wils-Owens (Molson Legends). The ranking could be drastically different however, after the semi-final round matches are played next week...

Down in Co-Rec B and just before Quarter-Finals are played tonight, THE usual suspect has got one firm hand on the title already: Sexed Up Again's Ahmet "AC" Turkdogan now totals 42 and maintains a significant lead over rival (and 2v2 team-mate) Denis Zezin (31 ) of Sindre's List. If there's one thing soccer intramurals have taught us these past years, it's that you do not want to give this goalscorer extraordinaire a big lead (especially in Co-Rec): you might as well call the race over, hand AC his umpteenth title, and go home.

And lastly, the Co-Rec C division features one final regular season match and the race is all but over! Indeed, Arash Baradaran Shokouhi (Penfielder II) and Richard Kiplesund (ShamWow) may well be in the lead for the moment (with 17 ), but they have several players (among which Balls to Play's Jonathan Mark and Jumbalaya's Eric Dingle) hot on their heels! We'll have to wait until the April 10-11 week-end to crown a champion in this division!
.
2v2 SOCCER Thursday, April 1, 2010

In the 2v2 league let's begin with Men's A which, as you may remember, holds the record for "highest goaltotal ever achieved by a single player in a single season" in the entire history of soccer intramurals. That glorious title of 101 GOALS currently belongs to Abdullah Alkhuzai, and was obtained in our 2v2 debut season of November 2009.

Well it looks like the Span-Arab Connection striker may very well have to abdicate his throne, because this semester our two current leaders Stephan Dalkie (Galacticos FC) and Ahmet "AC" Turkdogan (Bank Shot) are already within "striking distance" of triple digits, tallying respectively 90 and 84 . So, while record & crown will be contended between these two players AC may, if he plays his cards right, also obtain goalscoring title n10 of his already well-filled intramural career.

In Men's B, there also appears to be a clear favorite just before semi-finals are played. With a total of 75 , Hai-Son Nguyen will probably struggle to achieve triple digits but the Polar Bears player certainly has one good grip on the topscoring crown. It all depends on the form of his closest non-eliminated rivals, namely FC Corea's Chang Woo Park (63 ), Polar Bears's Simon Turcotte (61 ) and Easy Lays's Sindre Haugetraa (55 ).

Down in the ladies' category, the Women's A regular season has just concluded and playoffs are at our doorstep, with the two finalist teams (JACK and TBA 2) having also managed to place their main strikers in a close race for n1 spot. Indeed, who else but Casey Conway (53 ) and Kyrin Dhaliwal (52 ) could claim the crown this semester? Unfortunately not Zoe Prowse: despite a hefty goaltotal (53 ) the elimination of TBA 1 condemns the November 2009 CR female topscorer to watch the title slip away from her fingers...

Down in Co-Rec A regular season was also concluded last night, and much like midway through the November 2009 tournament we have a surprise at the top: a LADY is showing us BOYS how it's done!!!!! Indeed, Here for Beer's Anna Nathanson currently totals 61 and maintains a +4 lead over 2nd-ranked Sindre Haugetraa of Cool Whip! It clearly looks both team and invidual titles will be contended among these two captains on the day of the FINAL match, Tuesday 13-Apr @ 21:30. Another match-within-a-match and another date to mark down in your calendars, for a game you won't want to miss!

And lastly Co-Rec B, or should I say: "the division with equally enormous chances of breaking Abdullah's triple digit record". Here, goaltotals offer a *particularly* freakish sight because our current leaders tally a lead of... WHAT? More than 40 (!!!!) goals over their direct opponents you say?!!?? WOW...

And while by now everyone knows scoring to be second nature for Tenacious D Fans's Ahmet Turkdogan, special praise should go to Smurftastic's Arthur Omont who not only maintains a +5 lead over his rival but also totals a whopping 90 ! And dare I say it? These two players will be facing each other in the upcoming semi-finals bout! Really people, let me ask you the question: can direct clashes get any better this year or what!? More importantly, can our soccer nets weather the impending storm?

That's all for now guys! Next update will be sometime next week before finals, and then again a few days later for topscorer winners! Stay tuned!
