Hello soccer enthusiasts, and welcome to the July 2009 Intramurals of Outdoor Soccer!

Earlier this month, we originally set up the July league as yet another season of 11-a-side soccer, but unfortunately the poor outcome of registration almost forced us to cancel July soccer altogether. Instead, we chose to modify the playing format (7 vs. 7) and give registration another week.
No decision could be better inspired: not only was the new format enthusiastically received, but several more teams join our ranks and thereby extended everyone's playing privileges by one more month! :) I'm glad to announce we will have a total of 10 teams divided into two separate divisions competing in July.
Also, scheduling arrangements & league size this month have resulted in regular season being extended again: each team will play a total of... 8 regular season games! This was made in order to achieve a perfect double round robin in both divisions, that is every team playing each other twice. That's a LOT of games (which I'm sure you're all glad to be playing :)) but be prepared: it's going to be quite the soccer-marathon this month. Particularly, scheduling restrictions are unfortunately forcing each team to play (at least once in regular season) two games on the same day! I have tried making this condition as practical as possible by scheduling these games back-to-back. I hope you appreciate the effort, and apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
We hope you all enjoy the competition! |

Dear soccer fans, one more month of soccer has gone by and the June 2009 Outdoor Soccer Intramurals have now come to an end. We officially entered the "Summer" stage last week, as can be eloquently demonstrated by the great (and warm... and humid) weather we had lately, but mother nature is not the only factor causing mercury to rise this month.
Indeed, the hot soccer action from Molson Stadium & Forbes Field has provided us with some very exciting matches, especially when playoffs came about! Why not even 3 days ago, one of the greatest legends in the history of the beautiful game stepped onto McGill property to delight 15,000 Montreal fans of his presence. And while Zinedine Zidane took his first kicks of the ball on Molson Stadium, the June league soccer intramural finals were being played on Forbes.
And what finals they were!!! The Men's B division gave us one of the most epic matches in intramural history 8 goals, 2 red cards, 2 goals in extra time, all to be resolved with a penalty shootout an encounter which saw team MISN Impossible conquer their 21st title in McGill Intramurals history! As the lyrics from a Propellerheads song go, "it's all just a little bit of history repeating"...
As for our topscorer winners, here's who the month of June crowned.

In Men's B, there seemed to be a bit of a race between Michael Lanktree and Irfan Qureshi (of teams Lower Field Utd and MISN Impossible respectively, but also CRB teammates as it were), as well as Gόven Bolukbasi (Zoo Station). These three players were all tied up for 6 shortly before playoffs started, but that is exactly when a certain Ryan Lauzon decided to take the league by storm!! Scoring 12 goals (4 of which in the final!) in four matches the Uncle Ruckus forward completely obliterated his opposition, totalling 13 at season's end and solidly establishing his claim onto the McGill Athletics T-Shirt prize. While his efforts were not sufficient to lead his team to the final victory, Ryan can pride himself with the title of MB June topscorer and one of the highest goaltotals achieved in a single season during the Spring/Summer months.

Down in Co-Rec B, the race was pretty much also a non-factor. Indeed, with Michael Lanktree ending the season with 10 (and a +7 lead over second-ranked Martin Au, Irfan Qureshi, and Jeff Boudreau), the Lower Field Utd striker's efforts not only lead his team to the title of CRB June Champions, but firmly established him as this month's topscorer in the Co-Rec division. Making two-for-two for Lower Field Utd is the topscorer title of Zoya Aleem in the female category. Congratulations to the LFU team, truly the kings of Co-Rec Intramurals this month!
That's all for now people! This concludes the 2009 Intramural June league but stay tuned because... oh yes!! It all starts again next week-end with the JULY LEAGUE!!! |
