June 2009 - 2nd Week-End Update Monday, June 15, 2009
Hello soccer enthusiasts!

We've just hit the second week-end of June Intramurals passing by the mid-season mark, and the soccer on TV (or lack thereof) and increasingly warm weather are continuously reminding us that Summer is fast approaching! Not even a month ago we were all cheering for Barcelona or Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. This month, all major European leagues are taking a break and so we find themselves cheering for one of the Confederations Cup participants, patiently waiting for the big soccer of event of 2010.

How times flies huh?

With all teams having played at least 4 games now (with one small exception, due to a suspended match), let's have a look at who's leading the scoring charts (scorers and team rankings have been updated for all games up to and including Sunday June 14th).

In Men's B there's a bit of a crowd on top of the scorer standings, but one player is clearly dominating this first half of the season, both in the Men's and Co-Rec categories. With 6 in five matches, Lower Field Utd's Michael Lanktree has taken the n1 spot as well as a one-goal lead on rivals Irfan Qureshi (MISN Impossible), William Scott Johnston (MISN Impossible), and Gven Bolukbasi (Zoo Station). However nothing compares to how Michael is doing in...

...Co-Rec B! Indeed, while the team standings are clearly a Three Points or None-dominated affair, the scoring charts have Lower Field Utd flags planted all over. Thanks to his 7 in four matches (and particularly, his 4-goal performance in hist last game), Michael Lanktree is solidly installed at n1 spot and is the prime candidate to succeed to Spring 2009 topscorer Simon Booth. At n2, we find none other than one of Michael's Lower Field Utd teammates, Zoya Aleem with 3 , who narrowly came close to winning the Spring topscorer title in the female category.

That's all for now! Tune in next week-end for an end-of-regular season on team & scorer standings.

June 2009 - Rinse & Repeat for One More Month! Sunday, June 14, 2009
Hello soccer enthusiasts, and welcome to the June 2009 McGill Intramurals!!

Now at its 3rd consecutive year since its 2007 inception (the 2005 and 2006 seasons had just the Spring league), the June Intramurals are part of the developing success story of the McGill soccer program. As long as the sport's popularity continues to be so high among the McGill community, Athletics is proud to provide (and continue to provide) an intramural tournament during the months of May, June, and July!

Unfortunately this month scheduling restrictions limited our playing time, but I'm glad to announce we will have a total of 12 teams divided into two separate divisions competing in June. I'm also glad to report that after its great success during the Spring season, the Outdoor Co-Rec division has been confirmed!

We hope you all enjoy the competition!

Spring 2009 - Topscorer WINNERS!! Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Phew! Is Summer finally here? The Spring 2009 Outdoor Soccer Intramurals came to an end Sunday, and one thing was certain throughout this soccer-busy month of May: Canadian weather never ceases to amaze me!! Why earlier last week (and just when playoffs had started) Mother Nature decided to hit us with some 10C weather, sendind chills down the spines of MB and CRB semi-finalists and forcing match officials to wear toques and gloves for a May 31 match! I mean gloves in MAY??? So much for global warming huh? But I digress...

The important thing is that another season of exciting intramural soccer concluded this week-end, bringing plenty of old & new scorers to the charts and making our first-ever outdoor CO-REC league a smashing success!! (so much so that we're seriously considering implementing it for our Fall line-up... to be confirmed). That being said, where there are scorers there are CHAMPIONS, and where there are champions there are INTRAMURAL MUGS!

So let's take a look at who got their hands on the prizes!

In Men's B, what better way to finish the season than have the two leading goalscorers pitted against one another in the final game? As Team Manayek and Uncle Ruckus contended the title of MB Spring champions, their forwards Omar Sobhi and Mac Ojiaku battled for topscoring supremacy: a match-within-a-match of epic proportions and certainly a clash promising to be quite the spectacle to behold. Instead, imagine our disappointment when we witnessed one of the teams make mincemeat out of their opponents, a whopping 5-1 scoreline at full-time and a one-sided display if there ever was one! Anyways, in their final 60 minutes of Spring soccer Omar and Mac scored one goal each, thus bringing their global goaltotal to 6 . This at least gave a small consolation prize for the Manayek striker, who by his lower N of games ranked above his rival and seized the title of Spring 2009 MB topscorer.

In Men's C, there was a similar "ultimate showdown" scenario as John Coch's Ghetto United were set to face Ali Zohouri Zangeneh's Game Grinders in the final match. With both players stuck at 5 it seemed as if the title was there for the taking, at least for anybody who could find the way of the net just one more time. Instead, with both players drawing blanks the topscoring title went to John, the tie-breaking factor being (once again) a lower N of games played during the season.

Finally down in Co-Rec B, was it really surprising to see Simon Booth emerge as a victor in the end? With a +7 lead on his rivals before playoffs had even started, the Club Med forward easily retained his n1 spot till the end of the proceedings (and this despite his team could not advance further than the semi-finals). 15 in six outdoor games is a quite impressive feat, and Simon fully deserves the McGill Athletics t-shirt he'll be picking up at our intramural office this week!

As for the female category, not many goals were scored by the ladies this month! The final tally sees three players tied for first spot with 2 , namely Maia Lawson, Zoya Aleem, and Sofia Solar, with (believe it or not) the same number of games played throughout the season! Thus, the topscorer title goes to Maia who achieved her current goaltotal first. Bravo to her!

That's all for now people! This concludes our Spring league but stay tuned, because it all starts again next week-end! JUNE LEAGUE here we come!!
